Want to know how to effectively promote your self-published book so that it sells more than just a few copies? These are the top five book promotion tactics that author, interviewer and ghostwriter Yvonne Reddin recommends for writers marketing their own books.
These promotion techniques apply to self-published books, but most of them are relevant for traditionally-published books too.
Yvonne has used these strategies to publicise her own book Talk Learn Connect. Read on to find out how you too could boost your book’s profile by using her approach…

Top Book Promotion Tips

1. Create a Community
Well before your book is ready, create a community on social media. Pick two platforms you enjoy and begin there.
Your community will be your customers and also your biggest supporters. I am active on all platforms (except TikTok, it’s next on my list) but my most active platforms are LinkedIn and Instagram and where I market and promote my book the most.
Get to know Canva, if you are creative, it’s the only tool you need at the beginning for graphics, videos, presentations, newsletters etc.
The main thing is to enjoy social media. As you interact with people, listen and learn and be kind. Good manners go a long way and people remember how you made them feel.
If you don’t enjoy the social media side, hire someone who does, there are lots of ghostwriters (like me – check out my site for more information).
2. Invest in a Website
Invest in your own website, just in case social platforms disappear or you can’t get into them for some reason like if new owners change the way they work (think Elon Musk). You need to have a backup plan just like you do for your work projects, photos etc.
3. Learn from Authors in Your Genre
Connect and interact with other authors in your genre — if you can’t get in front of them, create your own podcast and try to get some local sponsors.

I have found most authors love talking about how they began and share their ups and downs if you ask them for advice and tips. They are incredibly supportive to new writers.
4. Invest in a Good Editing and Design Company
There are plenty of editing and design companies in Ireland. You can’t do it all yourself. Try to have at least €3,000 saved to invest in your book, and the marketing stage when it’s finished.
A book cover can cost up to €500 alone but this is your first hook for customers and then they will flip it over and read the blurb. So really take your time writing this or hire a professional to do it for you. It can be difficult summarising a 50,000 – 100,000-word book. But it can be done.
5. Get Reviews for Your Book
Contact book reviewers; there are many on twitter. The more people talk about your book, the more it will get noticed.
Goodreads and Amazon reviews can be copied and turned into posts on your social platforms.
Create a review video reel on Canva with a selection of reviews.
